Philo Melvin Buck, Jr., was born in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1877. Raised in India, where his parents were missionaries, he became a dean at the University of Nebraska and subsequently created a Department of Comparative Literature, the first in the country, at the University of Wisconsin. He and his wife, Altheia Hall Buck, had two children: Edward and Carolyn Laura (Mrs. William Harvey Reeves of New York City). Carolyn graduated from Lincoln High School in 1924. Philo Buck died in 1950.

The Philo Melvin Buck, Jr., collection is arranged into four series: 1) Correspondence, Undated; 2) Print Materials; 3) Financial Records; and 4) Educational Records.

Series 1 consists of social correspondence, mostly undated, including several invitations. Series 2 contains print materials, among which are articles describing a Lincoln ceremony in honor of General John J. Pershing in which Buck played a role; and the Carnegie Foundation sponsored trip that Buck and his wife made to India in the 1920s. Financial papers in Series 3 are related to a mortgage that Buck held on a house that he had sold in Madison, Wisconsin. Records of the education of Buck's daughter Carolyn are in Series 4. They include her report cards, high school diploma, activity programs, and 50th class reunion documents.
