BACKGROUND NOTE

Rod Colvin worked for WOW radio news from 1979-1989 in Omaha. Finding a new career as a writer, he founded Addicus Books in the early 1990s, locating it Omaha, Nebraska. His publications include Evil Harvest (1992), First Heroes (1987) and Overcoming Prescription Drug Addiction (1995). After losing a brother to long-term drug abuse, Colvin made this his life’s calling. He has appeared on NBC Nightly News, MSNBC News, and Medstar, along with being interviewed by Redbook Magazine and Family Circle Magazine.

Colvin’s non-fiction crime book, Evil Harvest, recounts the story of Mike Ryan, leader of a survivalist religious cult near Rulo, Nebraska, in the 1980s. Ryan was arrested in 1982 after a criminal investigation indicated that he had abused and killed five-year-old Luke Stice and later killed fellow cult member James Thimm. Ryan was convicted and sentenced to death.  Mike Ryan died of brain cancer on May 24, 2015 while awaiting execution on Nebraska’s death row.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
