BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Norway in 1841, John Steen immigrated with his parents to the United States and settled in Iowa. Steen served with the 12th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to Iowa for a time and then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He operated a lumberyard at Fremont, Nebraska, for a time, and then moved to Wahoo, Nebraska, where he operated a hardware and implement business with his brother, Otto. John Steen married Marie Hough on September 10, 1870. The couple had six children, daughters Nora and Mona, sons Theron and Clarence, and two daughters who died in infancy. John Steen died on March 23, 1922. He is buried at Wahoo, Nebraska.
Theron Steen served with Company K, 1st Nebraska Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, during the Spanish-American War. Later, he served as assistant secretary of the United States legation at Vienna, Austria. Theron H. Steen died on March 1, 1957. He is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno, California.

The manuscript component of this collection consists of one item, a calling card for Theron H. Steen, Wahoo, Nebraska. The card shows that Steen was a musician with Company K, 1st Nebraska Infantry, U.S. Volunteers.
