SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of four items relating to Thomas J. Allen’s service as a Sheriff and as Captain in the Fort Calhoun Rangers in Washington County, Nebraska Territory.

    1. Certificate: Thomas B. Cuming, Acting Territorial Governor, appointing Thomas J. Allen as Sheriff of Washington County, December 25, 1854.

    1. Certificate: Mark W. Izard, Territorial Governor, commissioning Thomas J. Allen as Captain, 5th Comp. Calhoun Rangers, Aug. 15, 1855.

    1. Agreement: Nov. 19, 1855, signed by Thomas J. Allen and various members of the Calhoun Rangers, agreeing to become members and to abide by the rules of the Calhoun Rangers.

    1. Letter: Aug. 15, 1932, from the NSHS to the family regarding possible donation of the items.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
