BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Pennsylvania in 1860, William Henry Fouse moved with his family to Nebraska in 1863.  The family lived on the Elk Horn Ranch near Beaver Creek in Seward County.  William married Margaret Lockhart around 1884.  By 1900, the couple was living in Clark, Wyoming, and had three children.  William continued farming after Margaret died in 1928.  William Fouse died on January 14, 1955.  He and his wife are buried in Belfry Cemetery at Belfry, Montana.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one letter from William H. Fouse of Belfry, Montana, to A.E. Sheldon of the Nebraska State Historical Society. In the letter Fouse describes the road ranch, Elk Horn Ranch, which his father, John E. Fouse, purchased in 1863. The ranch was located near Beaver Creek in Seward County, Nebraska. He describes the physical set-up of the ranch, and indicates precautions taken to protect the ranch from Indians and horse thieves. Fouse lists the names of his siblings and where they were living. He also mentions names of neighbors and others from Seward County, particularly around Beaver Crossing, Nebraska.
