BACKGROUND NOTE



Born at Kickapoo, Illinois, on July 24, 1826, William Wilson Ingraham enlisted with the Missouri Mounted Volunteers.  His unit spent the winter of 1847-1848 at Fort Kearny at present  day Nebraska City, Nebraska.  In the spring, they traveled about 180 miles west to build Fort Childs on the Platte River.  Little else is known about the life of Ingraham.  He died on June 9, 1888.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one volume of bound transcripts of letters written by William W. Ingraham from Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory, in 1847-1848.  The letters were sent to Ingraham’s brother in Peoria, Illinois.  The letters provide information about life at Fort Kearny and Fort Childs (later renamed Fort Kearny).



Note:  History Nebraska does not hold the original letters.  These letters were published in “Soldiers’ Letters from Fort Childs, 1848-49,” Nebraska History 82 (2001): 122-129.
