BACKGROUND NOTE

According to their constitution, the purpose of the Women’s Inter-Club Council was to “promote through cooperative efforts, a non-partisan program which will embrace child welfare, improved status of women, and community, state, national and international betterment.”  Any women’s organization could apply for membership.  Once approved by the Council’s executive committee, each member organization was allowed two delegates to vote as a unit.  Any member organization could submit a project for consideration of support from the Women’s Inter-Club Council.  Originally organized on June 1, 1943, the organization went through several name changes, including the Inter-Civic Round Table and the Women’s Inter-Civic Council.

The initial organizational meeting of representatives from a number of Lincoln’s women’s organizations took place at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce on November 30, 1945.  The meeting included representatives from the Lincoln Woman’s Club, Lincoln Quota Club, Lincoln B. & P. W. Club, Nebraska State Nurses Association, Y.W.C.A., A.A.U.W., Axis, Democratic Women’s Club, City Council P.T.A., League of Women Voters, Lincoln Council of Church Women, Beta Sigma Phi, Better Films Council and the Cosmetology Group.  December 11, 1945 marked the first regular meeting of the newly established Women’s Inter-Club Council.  Additional organizations that would join the Council included Altrusa, American War Mothers, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary, Catholic Ladies, Tifereth Israel Sisterhood, Federated Church Women, Republican Business Women, Junior League and the Urban League.

The Women’s Inter-Club Council of Lincoln, Nebraska, disbanded on May 24, 1994.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of the records of the Women’s Inter-Club Council of Lincoln, Nebraska.  Also included is one folder relating to its predecessor, the Inter-Civic Council.  Included in the collection are minutes of meetings, annual reports, correspondence, membership lists, committee reports, and two scrapbooks.  The records date from 1943 to 1994.  The collection is unprocessed but is organized chronologically.
