HISTORICAL NOTE

Before 1869 the Reverend Grienmiller of Rockport, Missouri, came to conduct services in the homes of German settlers in Richardson County, Nebraska. The Zion Reformed Church was organized in 1871, and the first child baptized. The church was built eight miles south of Dawson in 1895. After the Reformed Church of the United States merged with the Evangelical Synod of North America in 1934, the name of this congregation became the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1959 this congregation and the Congregational Church of Sebetha, Kansas, exchanged ministers to prepare for the coming merger of the two denominations to form the United Church of Christ. Church membership declined in the 1960s. The last Sunday service was held on June 3, 1973, and the building was demolished in 1974.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
