BACKGROUND NOTE

Born on November 11, 1932, at Detroit, Michigan, Kaj “Kay” Duncan Kristoffersen was the son of Magnus and Eva Kristoffersen.  Magnus and Eva were both librarians.  The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in May of 1937.  They remained in Lincoln until 1950 when the family moved to Hartford, Connecticut.  After graduating from high school, Kaj joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea.  He married Christa Leschinski and had three sons.  Kaj Duncan Kristoffersen died at Lakewood, Colorado, on September 27, 2012.  He is buried in Fort Logan National Cemetery at Denver, Colorado. 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of five memory books of Kaj “Kay” Duncan Kristoffersen dating from 1933-1939.  They appear to have been put together by Kaj’s mother when he was a child.  The first three books date from when the family was living in Detroit, Michigan.  The last two date from when the family was living in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The memory books record various family happenings each month and oftentimes contain photographs of Kaj and his family.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
