Maintenance Specialist

Description

History Nebraska is seeking an organized self-starter to undertake the responsibility of preserving the good condition and functionality of multiple buildings. The maintenance specialist will perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks including light electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general building maintenance. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and responsibly while observing all health and safety guidelines. Our goal is to maintain the buildings and common areas in the best possible condition for our visitors.

This is a full-time permanent position with a pay range of $20.936-$30.863 per hour, commensurate with experience and within budgetary constraints, if approved.

Examples of Work

  • Surveys buildings and repairs mechanical systems to ensure they are consistent with health and safety standards.
  •  Performs maintenance of electrical systems (e.g. replace light bulbs and ballasts, etc.).
  • Monitors and maintains HVAC and other systems and conducts repairs as necessary.
  • Performs manual repairs when necessary (e.g. fix locks and doors, etc.).
  • Undertakes activities of pest control such as spraying insecticide.
  • Conducts general upkeep procedures (e.g. building exterior and landscaping) and other tasks as assigned (e.g. painting, carpentry, etc.).
  • Supervises internal and external custodial team, including directing, assigning, and monitoring work.
  • Collaborates with various History Nebraska teams to ensure buildings are visitor friendly.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: helping other departments, participating in interdepartmental committees and working groups; participating in community outreach events.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Associates degree or equivalent vocational education in construction, industrial engineering, HVAC, welding, or other building trade. Experience in building maintenance, a mechanical trade, or performing safety inspections, investigations or training may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis as determined appropriate by the agency.

OTHER: Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods. Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a mandatory drivers safety course.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, safety practices, and general maintenance processes and methods.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools, common metering devices.
  • Ability to interact personably with internal and external customers, including but not limited to staff, visitors, and vendors.
  • Problem solving ability - Ability to research, analyze, troubleshoot problems.
  • Adaptability - Ability to adapt to changing priorities, equipment, and technology.
  • Time Management Skills - Ability to plan and prioritize projects and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Teamwork - Ability to recognize strengths in self and others and use them to achieve work goals.
  • Ability to cope with stress - Must be able to work well under pressure in emergency situations.
  • Must be committed to the organization’s core values and demonstrates them regularly in their work.
About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
