HISTORICAL NOTE



The Harlan County Pioneers and Old Settlers Association was open to those persons who had settled in Harlan County, Nebraska, prior to 1890. Wives of pioneers and children over 21 years of age were also eligible. James McGeachin of Orleans, Nebraska, was one of the leaders of the organization from its inception. Apparently the association was originally founded prior to 1900 and was reorganized in 1910. An annual picnic or reunion was often held.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of the records of the Harlan County Pioneer and Old Settlers Association, 1910-1932, arranged in three series: 1) Correspondence, 1910-1932; 2) Lists of Settlers, 1870-1890; and 3) Historical Data.



The bulk of the collection is made up of lists of settlers and printed matter relating to the pioneer history of Harlan County, Nebraska. The lists of settlers give farm location and the date of settlement.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
