BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Edward Danner was a member of the Nebraska Legislature from 1963 until his death in office in 1970. A native of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Danner settled in Omaha and became a butcher. Before his retirement from that profession, he served as field representative and Vice-President of Local 47 in the United Packinghouse Workers’ Union.

Danner was elected to the State Legislature from Omaha’s 11th District in November of 1962. He represented the Near North Side District, a predominantly black area. His work in the Legislature primarily emphasized Civil Rights issues, including education, employment and housing.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of material arranged in three series: 1) Correspondence, 1956, 1961-1970; 2) Issues; and 3) Miscellany.

The collection relates to Senator Edward Danner’s career as a state Senator in the Nebraska Legislature. The correspondence in Series 1 contains letters written and received by Senator Danner, although in a few instances he is the recipient of copies of letters sent to others. These letters deal primarily with Civil Rights issues.

The bulk of the material in Series 2 is comprised of papers and reports dealing with the specific Civil Rights issues of employment and housing. Various legislative bills and plans on both of these issues are included. Other topics covered in this series are a Human Relations Board, Urban Problems, Crime, and Youth Programs. The miscellaneous material in Series 3 includes material on programs Danner appeared on, committee hearing reports, bulletins, notes, and a few clippings.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
