BACKGROUND NOTE



With his companions “Pennsylvania Jacob” and “Iowa Milt,” Guy W. McClenathan traveled by wagon from Glenwood, Iowa to Denver, Colorado in the spring of 1880. Each of the travelers had horses and mules to sell in Denver, where they hoped to receive top prices.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one manuscript item, a diary dating from 1880. This diary, in typescript form, was kept by Guy W. McClenathan during an overland journey, by wagon, from Glenwood, Iowa to Denver, Colorado. Entitled “Wagon Trails,” the diary provides a humorous account of McClenathan’s experiences and observations, including his descriptions of the weather, the land, prevailing prices, and conditions of life in the settlements he viewed in Nebraska and Colorado. A map showing McClenathan’s route and camp sites is included.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
