BACKGROUND NOTE
M.A. Alexander was born in Fayette County, Iowa, and his family headed west through Kansas in 1859. In 1871 he found a job with the St. Joseph and Denver Railroad and later worked with the Union Pacific, C.B. & Q, and C.R.I. & P. R.R. in their water departments. He died in 1943 in Goodland, Kansas.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of two series of material: 1) Correspondence, 1929-1933; and 2) Autobiography. The collection relates mainly to the Indian uprising of 1864 along the Oregon Trail, and includes correspondence to and from survivors of Indian captivity.
Correspondents include: William Eubank, Laura Roper Vance, and Mabel Parriott.
