BACKGROUND NOTE



Warren E. Chesney was born in April of 1828 possibly in South Carolina as his wife, Carrie (Hogue) was born there 10 April 1834 and they were married 5 February 1855. In of 1862 they moved to Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska, where they lived for 12 years after which they moved to DeWitt, Saline County. His wife died 12 October 1884 and was buried in Beatrice with her children. Mr. Chesney was a charter member of the Beatrice and DeWitt Masonic lodges. He died 30 May 1893 and was buried in DeWitt, leaving 6 children, the youngest of whom was 17.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of correspondence (1878-1903), legal papers, and miscellaneous personal memorabilia. The collection relates to the life and profession of Warren E. Chesney in DeWitt, Nebraska.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
