BACKGROUND NOTE

The Ladies Welfare Society of Weeping Water, Nebraska, was formally organized in 1911 with the name: The Christian Home Aid Society. The club’s primary purpose was to help needy children through proceeds from quilt making and bake sales. Members also repaired clothing and donated food. The club underwent several name changes throughout the years including the Women’s Welfare Club and the Weeping Water Welfare Society. Throughout the years the club’s approach to charity broadened to include all people who were needy.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection of records of the Ladies Welfare Society of Weeping Water, Nebraska, consists of seven volumes and one envelope of manuscript material arranged in three series: (1) Minute Books, 1928-1971; (2) Financial Records, 1960-1972; and (3) Miscellany, 1946-1954.

Series 1 contains club minutes from the approximate time of adoption of the final name, 1928 to 1971 with the absence of years 1937-1944. No explanation for this absence is apparent. About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
