BACKGROUND NOTE

On May 28, 1936, a Nebraska delegation of women attended a triennial meeting of the Associated Country Women of the World at the Cataract Hotel, Niagara Falls, New York (Secretary’s book, 1937).  Following this meeting, Miss Mary-Ellen Brown proposed the first state-wide Home Extension organization for Nebraska.  The Nebraska Council of Home Extension Clubs held its first annual meeting on June 15-16, 1937 at the Pawnee Hotel in North Platte, Nebraska.  The club has been known by two other names:  the Nebraska Home Demonstration Council and the Nebraska Homemakers’ Council.  The Nebraska Council of Home Demonstration Clubs was to be an affiliate of the National Home Demonstration Council as well as an affiliate of the International Country Women of the World.

The Council’s organizational goals focused on education, and improving the well-being and unity of country-women.  It also worked to promote women in Nebraska history, from pioneer women to the more recent prominent women who have come from Nebraska.  The Council was involved in 4-H clubs, and “promote[s] rural health activities, and encourage[s] spiritual life in the home” (Secretary’s book, 1942).  Meetings included songs, inspirational stories, food, and socializing.  The Council participated in many fund-raisers and projects.  The Murals Documentation Project, carried out in 1979-1980, forms a significant part of this collection.  For this project the extensions of the Council throughout Nebraska recorded and often photographed any kind of mural in their town or county as a means to broaden the cultural knowledge of Nebraskans.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of records of the Nebraska Council of Home Extension Clubs arranged in three series:  1) Administrative records, 1940-1979; 2) Scrapbooks and historian’s records, 1936-1986; 3) Mural Inventory Project records, 1979-1980 (documenting murals created 1894-1980).  Materials in this collection relate to the history of the organization, members, activities and projects, etc.

The administrative records of Series 1, arranged chronologically, contain membership books, secretary’s books, state council meeting records, and annual meeting reports and books. Series 2, scrapbooks and historian’s records, contain eight oversized volumes dated c.1939-1986. The other items are arranged chronologically and include the historian’s record [a scrapbook with commentary], scrapbooks of Washington trips and a Silver Milestone Anniversary Album. In Series 3, the Mural Inventory Project Records, there are photographs, newspaper clippings, slides and photo negatives that relate to the NCHEC.  The files are arranged in alphabetical order by county.  Included is a notebook containing a summary of the mural documentation by county and city, and mural inventory forms that include the artist’s name(s) and location of the mural.  Researchers must wear gloves when handling mural photographs, slides, and negatives.
