Francis G. Hamer was born in Seneca County, Ohio, on February 20, 1843. He was the oldest of the four children born to Francis and Mary Hamer of Canton, Ohio. Hamer received his early education in the schools of Ohio and Indiana and in 1863 he became a student of law in the office of George K. Perrin and William R. Manlove and received his law training in Indianapolis. In 1869 Hamer migrated to Nebraska and the following year began to practice law in Lincoln. Shortly before settling in Nebraska, Hamer was married to Rebecca A. McCord of Delphi, Indiana, and they were to have two children, Thomas Francis and Grace Julia. In 1872 Hamer moved west and became the first lawyer to settle in Kearney. He engaged in an active law practice and in 1883 he was appointed judge of the Tenth Judicial District of Nebraska. Hamer ran and was defeated in the election for the Supreme Court in 1893, but won the election in 1910 and was a distinguished member of the bench from 1911-1918. About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
