BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Illinois on June 21, 1841, Amos Morton Barker moved with his parents to Iowa in 1844. During the Civil War, he served with the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he married Emily Coleman, and the couple had three children. Barker brought his family to Nebraska in 1873, and by 1874, he had taken a homestead in Franklin County. He farmed in Franklin County until about 1886, when he moved west. He lived in southern California until shortly before his death. Amos Morton Barker died at the home of his son in Woodruff, Kansas, on November 30, 1910.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one item, a printed pamphlet entitled, “Solution of an Unsolved Problem,” by A.M. Barker, Franklin, Nebraska. In the pamphlet, Barker describes his plan to build an airship that could be used to end wars and potentially fly to the North Pole. He also asks for those reading his pamphlet to donate money to help him achieve his goal.
