BACKGROUND NOTE

Incorporated on August 6, 1884 at Beatrice, Nebraska, by Frank Barclay, the purpose of the Beatrice Gas, Light and Coke Company was to construct, erect, establish, maintain, operate, lease and otherwise use a system of gas works in the City of Beatrice, and to manufacture, buy, sell and deal in coal and coke.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one folder containing a record book relating to the Beatrice Gas, Light and Coke Company. Entries in the record book include articles of incorporation, an ordinance from the City of Beatrice governing their dealings with the company (granting use of right-of-way, etc.), and a subscription list to capital stock for the company. Entries date between May 20 and August 6, 1884. Several loose documents relating to Frank Barclay and the Beatrice Gas, Light and Coke Company are also included in the collection.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
