SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The manuscript portion of this collection consists of a ledger for the Butler County District 17 School dating from 1877-ca. 1906. Entries consist of expenses paid including salary for teachers, cleaning and housekeeping, coal delivery, furniture, etc.



The photograph portion of this collection [RG5030.PH] consists of approximately 350 photographs (mostly in albums). The majority of the photographs (241) relate to the Bellwood District 71 School in Butler County. Rhoda Van Fleet Cook taught school in Bellwood for 40 years, retiring in 1973. Photographs from other district schools including Butler County District 13, Greenleaf District 52, Octavia District 17, District 76, and District 78 are also included. The collection also contains six (6) Van Fleet and Cook Family photographs.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
