BACKGROUND NOTE

Born at Douglas, Otoe County, Nebraska, on July 2, 1911, Wayne Otis Reed served as the Otoe County Superintendent of Schools before being elected as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1942.  Reed later served as the Deputy Commissioner of Education for the U.S. Office of Education in Washington, D.C.  Wayne Otis Reed died in Washington, D.C., on October 28, 1974.


SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of papers and seventeen oversized scrapbooks relating to the career of Wayne Otis Reed.  The bulk of the collection relates to Reed’s work as the Nebraska Superintendent of Public Instruction, and later to his time as Deputy Commissioner of Education.  Materials include articles, reports, subject files, certificates, and scrapbooks dating from ca. 1942 to 1973.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
