BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Steeleville, Illinois, on June 14, 1899, Joseph H. Hartley was the son of Allen D. Hartley and Nellie C. (Bundy) Hartley. He spent much of his career working as a draftsman, commercial artist and later personnel director for the Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph Company in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a talented artist and illustrated the company newsletter with various cartoons and drawings. He married Lucile Brown on April 23, 1921. They would have four children.

Hartley was a member of numerous organizations including the Scottish Rite, Sons of the American Revolution, Order of the Eastern Star, and the First United Methodist Church. He also served as past master of Lancaster Lodge 54, A.F. & A.M. and as past president of the Frank Woods Telephone Pioneers Association.

Joseph “Joe” Hartley died in Lincoln on November 3, 1990. His wife Lucile died in 1983. Joe and Lucile Hartley are buried at Cook Cemetery in Johnson County, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of forty-two volumes of journal/scrapbooks compiled by Joseph Hartley. The volumes are a compilation of personal and professional materials including daily/weekly diary entries, sketches, letters, photographs, greeting cards, event programs, membership cards, etc. Included are cartoons he drew to illustrate the Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph Company’s newsletters. The materials date from 1920 to 1987.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
