BACKGROUND NOTE



Born near Weeping Water, Nebraska, on July 20, 1896, Claude Canaday graduated from Weeping Water High School and the University of Nebraska.  He served in the Army during World War I, but did not go overseas.  Canaday married Grace Stahl on September 15, 1920.  The coupled farmed near Bloomfield, Knox County, Nebraska.  Canaday was active in community and church affairs, serving as chaplain to the local American Legion post during World War II.  He believed in reconstruction after World War II. Through Canaday’s efforts, Bloomfield adopted the Germany city of Kamen in the Ruhr Valley, and the community donated one thousand bushels of corn to help starving people in Europe after the war.  Claude Canaday died April 17, 1988.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of a photocopy of a letter sent to Claude Canaday by Cuban leader Fidel Castro.  In the letter, Castro thanks Canaday and the Bloomfield Board of Commerce for their efforts to send the Cuban people five thousand bushels of corn and a sugar cane harvesting machine.  Castro also goes on to answers questions regarding Cuban military aid in Africa, as well as drug trafficking.  The letter, written in Spanish, is dated June 15, 1978.  An English translation by Suzanne Prenger is also included.
