Frank J. Kobes was born in Wilber, Nebraska, January 28, 1890. He attended public schools in Wilber and Crete, Nebraska. His career in the city of Crete began with the position of city clerk, 1918-1922. He was then elected mayor and served in that capacity during the years 1922-1928 and then re-elected in 1930. In addition to public office, Kobes also held the position of president of the Crete Brewery.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Kobes papers consist mostly of materials relating to the litigation surrounding the Missouri Pacific Railroad line through Crete, Nebraska. The collection contains correspondence, largely that of Robert Van Pelt, attorney for the Missouri Pacific Abandonment Committee, 1943-1946; materials regarding the hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission, 1944; and some miscellaneous clippings, handbills, etc.
Note: Frank J. Kobes also served as district chairman in the United War Fund of Nebraska [RG3262] and the USO [RG1331] during World War II. Some correspondence relating to his activities as chairman can be found in those collections.
