BACKGROUND NOTE

In 1925 the Lincoln General Hospital of Lincoln, Nebraska, received its first patients and in that same year the School of Nursing held its first classes. The school was firmly established under the tenure of Gladys Smits, the first director, who served from 1927 through 1937. Nursing students began receiving part of their general education at the University of Nebraska in 1932. Under the new curriculum established in 1970, students attended university classes during the first two semesters and spent the next two years at the School of Nursing.

In May of 1976, the last class was graduated and the Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing was closed. The hospital continued to provide clinical experiences for students in the nursing education program at the University of Nebraska.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
