HISTORICAL NOTE

The Synod of Nebraska, which was the statewide governing body of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., was organized on October 1, 1874, composed initially of the Presbyteries of Omaha, Nebraska City, and Kearney. The Presbytery of Nebraska City, over the churches in Nebraska south of the Platte River, had been organized in November of 1862 by instructions of the Synod of Iowa South. The Presbytery of Omaha covered the churches north of the Platte.

In November of 1872, the state was further sub-divided by the organization of the Presbytery of Kearney with jurisdiction over the churches in Nebraska west of a line running north and south along the eastern boundaries of Nuckolls, Clay, and Hamilton counties. In October of 1881, the Presbytery of Hastings was established from territory originally included in that of Kearney. These two were merged in 1944 to form the Presbytery of the Platte.

The Presbytery of the Niobrara was organized in 1885. In 1958 the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. merged with the United Presbyterian Church of North America to form the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
