SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection contains correspondence, certificates, and miscellaneous other materials relating to various members of the Gaddis and Higgins families of Custer County, Nebraska. A majority of the materials concern Nancy Higgins Gaddis, including letters (1876-1882) from friends in Newark, Balsora, and Gibbon, Nebraska. Metta Dungan writes about her teaching experience in Gibbon, Nebraska. There are teacher contracts for Nancy (1882-1883) along with her student attendance book. There are also copies of her membership certificates to the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Free Methodist Church of North American and to the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union of Nebraska. A copy of a 1962 letter by Porter Gaddis remembers his mother on her 100th birthday anniversary.
Also included in the collection are histories written by Porter Gaddis. One of the histories (from 1916) relates to the Mitchell-Ketchum murder in Custer County. The second item (undated) concerns the history of the early religious movement in Comstock, Nebraska, and the surrounding area. Additional miscellaneous items include a business card for William Porter Higgins of Sargent, Nebraska; obituaries for Mary Elizabeth Higgins (1900) and Ella Suggs (1908) of Orleans, Nebraska; a copy of an 1882 tree claim for Adrian Higgins; and a partial family tree for the Higgins family.
