BACKGROUND NOTE
Ezra S. Hayhurst, a native of Catawissa, Pennsylvania, arrived in Loup City, Nebraska in 1880. He first appears as the proprietor of a hardware store in the 1882-3 Nebraska Gazetteer. He became partners with Samuel E. Gallaway around 1909, when the Hayhurst and Gallaway Hardware Company was first listed in the Nebraska Gazetteer. Gallaway, a native of Canada, had arrived in Loup City in 1883. Hayhurst died on June 29, 1911 and Gallaway continued to operate the business until his death on November 21, 1930.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one oversize ledger dating from 1906-1910. This item relates to the business conducted by the Hayhurst and Gallaway Hardware Company of Loup City, Nebraska and its predecessor, the E.S. Hayhurst hardware store. The ledger includes information on accounts held with Hayhurst and Gallaway, including account name, dates of purchases, items purchased, cost, and payment received. An alphabetical index of account names appears at the beginning of the volume.
