BACKGROUND NOTE



The Oregon Trail Memorial Commission was organized in the early 1900s for the purpose of locating and marking the Oregon Trail, where possible, in the state of Nebraska. This organization worked in conjunction with the national organization, as well as with those of surrounding states. The Commission was aided in its work by such organizations as the Grand Army of the Republic, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Nebraska State Historical Society, and other groups interested in preserving the pioneer history of Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of three manuscript boxes and three volumes of material arranged in five series: (1) minutes, 1911-1914; (2) reports, 1914; (3) correspondence, 1908-1923; (4) scrapbooks, 1911-1923; (5) miscellany.



The material in this collection relates to the location of historical sites in the state of Nebraska, and the marking of these sites with monuments and markers.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
