BACKGROUND NOTE

Lloyd Edgar Welch was born March 2, 1907, at Elm Springs, Arkansas.  When he was nine months old, his parents came to a farm southwest of Haddam, Kansas, in the Happy Hollow community where he spent his boyhood and was educated in country schools through the eighth grade.  In February 1931 Lloyd married Lorena Cline.  He moved to the Hubbell vicinity of Thayer County, Nebraska, in 1933.  He bred registered Hereford cattle and grew certified seeds and grains for twenty-five years.

A member of the Nebraska Wheat Commission since its establishment, Lloyd was serving as its chairman at the time of his death.  As a member of the commission Welch was active in drawing the attention of European grain processors to Nebraska-produced wheat.  Delegations of millers and government agricultural experts from Italy and from Greece visited the Welch farm.  He took an active part in the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association, was secretary of the Jefferson County Co-op Council, and worked with the Thayer County Extension Service in bringing about improvement in farming methods.

Lloyd Welch was fatally injured on his farm, caught in the power takeoff of a crop drive.  He died on November 10, 1957, and was buried in the Fairbury Cemetery at Fairbury, Nebraska.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
