Don’t miss the Sesquicentennial Photo Exhibit “Bridges: Sharing Our Past to Enrich the Future”

“Sunflower Fields” — Banner County by Kimberly Sharples

Hildegard Center for the Arts of Lincoln has announced the 2017 schedule for the statewide Sesquicentennial Traveling Photo Exhibit “Bridges” Sharing Our Past to Enrich the Future,”—including related “Instructional Resources” available to Nebraska educators. The Nebraska State Historical Society is one of the collaborators on the exhibit.
Beginning January 2017, the Sesquicentennial Traveling Photo Exhibit  “Bridges: Sharing Our Past to Enrich the Future,” sponsored by Hildegard Center for the Arts of Lincoln, will make its journey to six regions across the state in honor of Nebraska’s upcoming yearlong Sesquicentennial celebration.
Endorsed by the Nebraska 150 Commission as a “Signature Event,” the “Bridges” Sesquicentennial Exhibit represents a special collaboration between Hildegard Center for the Arts and the Nebraska Tourism Commission and the Nebraska State Historical Society.
In 2015, the three organizations issued a statewide photo call to amateur and professional photographers, inviting them to capture images of historic sites or hidden treasures located across Nebraska. Over 800 photo submissions were received.
Serving as jurors for the “Bridges” Photo Call: contributor to National Geographic Magazine and NEBRASKAland Magazine Joel Sartore; University of Nebraska-Lincoln Professor Emeritus George Tuck; and regular contributors to Nebraska Life Magazine, Bobbi and Steve Olson.
Ninety-three photographs, one from each county, were selected and proudly represent a cross-section of Nebraska. The first stop on the “Bridges” Photo Exhibit tour is the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln (1155 Q St.) where a premiere reception will be held the evening of Friday, January 6th from 5-7pm.

“Love Long Ago”—Butler County by Caryl Bohn (the old house referenced in Ted Kooser’s Quote)

Winning photos will be included in a digital catalogue together with a virtual tour of all submitted photographs located at the Hildegard Center’s website www.hildegardcenter.org.
Also developed is a collection of Instructional Resources—ninety-three –to enhance Nebraska’s fourth grade social studies curriculum.
Led by “Bridges” committee member Donna Williams, the winning county photos were correlated with 4th grade Nebraska social studies standards and a sub-committee created instructional resources consisting of: the county photo, the narrative, specific state social studies standards, information about the county, inquiry questions, and related websites.  Paul Hunt, an adjunct geography professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, devised a story map that will allow teachers and students to access the instructional resources of a county via a virtual Nebraska map. In January, the photos, instructional resources, and the story map may be accessed free of charge at the Hildegard Center’s website www.hildegardcenter.org.
The Nebraska Tourism Commission has featured fourteen of the photos in its 2017 state calendar.  And the Omaha World Herald included all winning photographs and narrative in its newly published book titled “NEBRASKA: 150 YEARS TOLD THROUGH 93 COUNTIES,” available in stores and/or at the website www.owhstore.com. Note: Hildegard Center for the Arts will not receive any profits from the sale of the book.
The “Bridges” Sesquicentennial Traveling Photo Exhibit is supported in part by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment with the following Statewide Sponsors; the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission; Nebraska Tourism Commission; Johnson Hardware Company; the Ethel S. About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
