Five Ways to Experience Nebraska History

Our state has a rich history with so many stories to tell. History Nebraska has five easy and fun ways you can discover that amazing history yourself!

Feel the awe and curiosity the pioneers experienced when they saw the most famous landmark on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails.

Chimney Rock was a beacon of hope for a generation of cross-country migrants, telling them that they were on the right path and giving them the strength of will needed to push on to their destination. It’s still standing today, a stone monument to an undertaking that shaped the future of both Nebraska and the United States.

Fort Robinson is one of the great historic places of the American West. Its stretches back to 1868 and touches on many different eras of Nebraska and United States history. Now, the building that once served as the post’s headquarters tells the many stories from the fort’s complex past.

Many lives intersected with Fort Robinson. Native Americans, African-American Buffalo Soldiers, German POWs, and even the World War II-era K-9 Corps. Visit today and uncover that history yourself.

Nebraska has been a state for 150 years, but the history of our home stretches back 12,000 years. The Nebraska History Museum, located in downtown Lincoln, is the best place to discover the history of our state.

Many peoples and cultures have made Nebraska their home. History Nebraska’s vast collections allow the museum to tell all sorts of amazing stories from our state’s rich past. Plan your visit by looking at a list of current exhibits on display.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
