“Old Jules” Sandoz and the Well

“Old Jules” Sandoz and the Well

Hear the dramatic tale of “Old Jules” Sandoz at Fort Robinson.

In 1884, a simple need for water nearly cost Jules Sandoz—better known as “Old Jules”—his life. After falling 65 feet into a well of his own making, infection set in and brought him face to face with none other than Dr. Walter Reed at Fort Robinson.

To this day, the story of “Old Jules” Sandoz’s life and adventures, father of local author Mari Sandoz, has continued to capture the imagination of readers and the general public alike. Local author and historian Christine Maloney Ambrose will discuss the well accident and its impact on Old Jules’ life on September 20th at 1 pm MT at the Fort Robinson History Center.

To enter Fort Robinson State Park, a Nebraska State Park entry permit is required and can be bought at the Fort.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
