Lunchbox Lecture: Charles Jackson French: An Unsung Hero

Discover the story of the "Hero of the Solomon Islands!"

On February 17 at 12:00 pm, Eric Ewing from the Great Plains Black History Museum in Omaha will tell the story of Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Jackson French during the February Lunchbox Lecture at the Nebraska History Museum. Known as the “Hero of the Solomon Islands,” French served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. When the Japanese bombed his ship near Guadalcanal, French swam through shark-infested waters to save 15 of his fellow crewmen. After decades of being one of America’s unsung heroes, Charles Jackson French was posthumously honored with several awards in 2022.

Event admission is free. LNKTV will record the lecture and make it available to the public.

Special thanks to the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation for providing funding for this event series and the recording to broadcast on LNKTV.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
