Join Conservation Nebraska’s Dr. David Loope for a free talk on the geologic history of the Nebraska Sand Hills at the Nebraska History Museum on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 1-2pm. We will explore how sand and silt are transported by wind and how dunes and loess are formed. This will be followed by a discussion of sediment sources and what we know, and still do not know, about the age and dynamics of the Sand Hills.
Dr. Loope, a native of rural Virginia, taught geology at UNL from 1981 to 2018. He majored in biology at Duke University from 1967 to 1971, but fell in love with geology during his three years of work with the National Park Service at Canyonlands National Park in southeast Utah. He earned a second B.S. in geology at Utah State University, and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Wyoming. He and his wife live in Lincoln (she works at Morrill Hall). Their two sons now live in Flagstaff, AZ and Blacksburg, VA.
