Archeology Curation Request

A geometric logo features an interlocking dark teal "L" and orange "N" on a light gray background with a faint mountain outline.

For a fee, the Nebraska State Historical Society may ensure the long-term curation and management of collections and records from
undertakings within the state. Acceptance of such collections is contingent upon several factors, including available space,
adherence to NSHS curation standards, and legal title status.

Please note that NSHS is not interested in adding surface-collected glass, brick, miscellaneous metal, generic flakes, FCR, whiteware, etc., to the permanent collection.

A one-time fee of $1000 per cubic foot is charged for intake of collections from State and Private Lands, with a minimum charge of $100 for any collection accepted.

For collections controlled by entities other than NSHS, agreements shall be in place for a mutually agreed-upon number of years, with the option to renew, at a fee of $11 per cubic foot of material.

When you submit this form, it will not automatically collect your details, such as your name and email address, unless you provide them yourself.

For the permanent Archeology Collection, NSHS will accept any provenanced diagnostic, unique, or rare items (particularly projectile points, formal lithic tools, and precontact ceramics), a sample of other material types found on the surface, plus most contextually related subsurface materials recovered, as long as clear title has been obtained; a Consent for Collection of Archeological Materials for Potential Curation at the NSHS form is available for contractor use.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
