BACKGROUND NOTE

The Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway Company was incorporated on March 5, 1903, by Elbert Hurd, Henry Wilson, Elmer Brown, William Shankland, and Charles Biggerstaff. The capital stock was $200,000.00, issued in 2000 shares. The railway was intended to extend from Omaha to Beatrice but only about nine miles of track were ever constructed in the first and only year of operation, all within the city of Lincoln. In 1928 the rail line was purchased by the Abel Construction Company, which used it for internal hauling and as a connection with main railroad lines in Lincoln.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of three volumes of records of the Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway Company, arranged in three series: (1) Minutes, 1903-1904; (2) records regarding the sale of the Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway, 1925-1929; and (3) Miscellany. The bulk of the records relate to the sale of the Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway to the Abel Construction Company of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1928. Also included are the official minutes of the company, 1903-1904. The materials were loaned for microfilming in December of 1973. About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
