BACKGROUND NOTE

The Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway Company was incorporated on March 5, 1903, by Elbert Hurd, Henry Wilson, Elmer Brown, William Shankland, and Charles Biggerstaff. The capital stock was $200,000.00, issued in 2000 shares. The railway was intended to extend from Omaha to Beatrice but only about nine miles of track were ever constructed in the first and only year of operation, all within the city of Lincoln. In 1928 the rail line was purchased by the Abel Construction Company, which used it for internal hauling and as a connection with main railroad lines in Lincoln.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of three volumes of records of the Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway Company, arranged in three series: (1) Minutes, 1903-1904; (2) records regarding the sale of the Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway, 1925-1929; and (3) Miscellany. The bulk of the records relate to the sale of the Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway to the Abel Construction Company of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1928. Also included are the official minutes of the company, 1903-1904. The materials were loaned for microfilming in December of 1973. The Nebraska State Historical Society does not hold the original records.
