HISTORICAL NOTE

The Abie Milling Company was incorporated in 1905 in Abie, Nebraska, a predominantly Czech settlement. In 1912 the original owners (Vacin, Maleveo, and Svoboda) sold their interests to Joe Koutnik and Charles Docehal who assumed control of the operation. The mill produced and sold the “White Lily” and “Pride” brands of Nebraska wheat flours. Another major product was “Svoboda Rye Flour.” All of the mill’s products were known for their high standard of quality and were marketed extensively throughout the Omaha, Fremont, Schuyler, Prague, and Butler County areas. As a result of unfavorable economic conditions, largely brought on by the Great Depression, the Abie Milling Company had discontinued operations by 1945. The old mill building was subsequently dismantled and moved to a nearby farm.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
