Funny, Weird, and Aggressively Wholesome: Valentine’s Day Cards in Our Collections

Valentine’s Day cards come in a variety of types. They can be sweet, funny, or just plain strange. It’s Valentine’s Day and we’ve been looking through our collections for the best card. Join us on this journey. Be warned, there’s a bit of weird along the way.

And yes, “Cupid with Gun” will make sense.

We’ve got your standard aggressively wholesome 1980s cards from Valentine, Nebraska.

There’s a bunch of these adorable car-themed cards ranging from 1906-1910.

Then there’s this (unfortunately) undated card, complete with little kid scribbles.

On it is a poem that reads “A Radish once loved a little green Pea. If she were alone, how happy I’d be! But of sisters just like her she had quite a few, so he took them to Utah and married them too.”

One of our personal favorites from 1968, Suzanne Falter’s handwritten note thanking her Valentine for making a particularly sharp knife.

Finally, two of the strangest Valentine’s Day cards in our collections.

We promised you Cupid With Gun. And here it is. Because nothing says love more than a small naked baby pointing a gun at you.

This is a rude little card. According to our records, it is a Valentine, but we’re not sure we’d like to receive this one.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
