BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Alice M. Conkling, daughter of James Cook Conkling and Fannie A. (Lowry) Conkling, was born in Springfield, Illinois, on July 19, 1877. The family settled in Nebraska and Alice spent the rest of her life in Franklin, Franklin County, Nebraska. She attended Franklin Academy and then worked in her father’s real estate/insurance office for many years. Alice Conkling died at Franklin, Nebraska, on August 31, 1968.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of two letters. One letter, written May 19, 1893, to Alice Conkling by Charles E. Bessey, botany professor at the University of Nebraska, identifies plants in Conkling’s garden in Franklin, Nebraska. The second, undated letter written by Conkling to Bessey lists various plant names.
