BACKGROUND NOTE

From its founding in 1790 as the First Day Society, the American Sunday School Union had as its primary work the founding of Sunday schools in rural communities. It was also known for its publication and its ticket reward system for Sunday school students who memorized scripture. First changing its name to the Sunday and Adult School Union in 1817, it adopted its longstanding name, the American Sunday School Union in 1824. 150 years later it became the American Missionary Fellowship and it continues today as InFaith.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of material documenting the work of the American Sunday School Union in Nebraska, 1895-1908. Included are annual reports, publications, a history of the organization in Nebraska and miscellaneous notes.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
