SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one letter written by Blackhawk, a Sioux Indian, to Ida James, daughter of William H. James, former Nebraska governor (1871-1873). The letter dates from March 7, 1875, while Blackhawk was serving a prison sentence. In the letter he states that he wished William James was still the governor because he felt his prison sentence would be commuted if that were the case.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
