BACKGROUND NOTE



Nels and Ella Nelson came from Skone, Sweden, to Illinois around the mid-1800’s. Their daughter, Julia, born at Geneva, Illinois in 1881, was married to Calvin Bressler after the family moved to Nebraska in 1887. The Nelsons and Bresslers were farmers, but Alan Bressler, their son, was a machinist and heavy equipment operator.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection is arranged in four series: 1) Correspondence, 1881-1961; 2) Poems and songs of Julia Bressler, 1939-1941; 3) Records, 1892-1959; 4) Miscellaneous. Some correspondence relates to Nebraska State mental hospitals.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
