BACKGROUND NOTE
Born April 6, 1907, son of Charles Albert and Emma Bertha (Coffin) Humberger, Charles Eugene “Charlie” Humberger grew up on a farm near Fairbury in Jefferson County. He attended the University of Nebraska before working as a teacher. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and was part of Company 762 which worked on projects at Red Cloud, Chadron State Park, Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Scottsbluff National Monument.
Humberger spent the bulk of his career with the National Park Service. He held several National Park Service assignments, including serving as superintendent of the Mount Rushmore National Monument. He took a leave from the National Park Service to serve with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II.
Humberger retired from the National Park Service in 1966 and moved with his wife, Margaret (Canfield), to Sonoma, California. He served as director of the California State Trapshooting Association for a number of years and was a member of the Masons, the Scottish Rite and the Shriners. Charles Eugene Humberger died on May 14, 2006 and is buried at Valley Cemetery in Sonoma, California.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of copies of “Memoirs of Company 762,” a reminiscence describing Charles Humberger’s experience while he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Nebraska, 1933-1938. Also included are discharge papers and a petition requesting an investigation of an officer.
Note: The photo component of this collection consists of fifty-eight photographic prints. Included are photographs relating to Charles Humberger’s work with the Civilian Conservation Corps, ca. 1933-1938. The photographs show Chadron State Park, Chadron, Nebraska; Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Mumper, Nebraska; Red Cloud, Nebraska; and Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska.
