BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



Clyde Hookham was born on August 12, 1915 in Waverly, Nebraska, to Leslie and Elizabeth May (Sharman) Hookham. In 1917 he moved with his parents to a ranch in Cherry County, Nebraska, and in 1927 to a farm in Antelope County. His education was in rural schools and concluded at the end of the eighth grade. However, in later years, Clyde took several courses by mail in radio repair and mechanics. Clyde worked on his parent’s farm until his army life began in March 1942. Clyde returned to farming following his discharge in 1945, until his retirement in 1965. He never married, and died of a stroke on October 1, 1989.

This collection of papers relating to Clyde Hookham is arranged as follows:

The materials in this collection relate to Clyde Hookham’s service in the US Army during World War II. Hookham was a private in Battery B, 55th CA. The correspondence in Series 1 contains letters written by Clyde to his family. They cover his entire service career and concern Clyde’s day-to-day experiences in the military. Series 2 consists of letters written to Clyde, not only by family members but friends as well, and provide some insights into what was going on back in the states on the home front. Series 3 is a diary Clyde kept during a portion of his service. Series 4 contains miscellaneous items including some exams Clyde took while in the service.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
