SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The manuscript portion of the collection consists of miscellaneous items related to Donovan Merklin’s involvement in the Free & Accepted Masons (F. & A.M.). Merklin was a member of Justice Lodge #180 (F. & A.M.) in Benkelman, Nebraska. He was also the first Grand Master of the Sagamihara Lodge #13 (F. & A.M.) in Sagami, Japan. Most of the documents in the collection relate to the founding of Sagamihara Lodge #13.

The photo component consists of twelve 13″x16″ and three 20″x24″ photographs taken by Chief Petty Officer Donavan Merklin of the Hachioji School for the Blind in Japan, which he helped establish while serving as the first Grand Master Mason for the Sagamihara Lodge #13 (F. & A.M.) in Sagami, Japan in the mid-1950s.
