BACKGROUND NOTE
Doris E. (Hudson) Foster was a professional social worker with the Nebraska State Department of Public Welfare in Lincoln, Nebraska. In April of 1944 she left Nebraska to head a staff of five Red Cross workers stationed near Lincoln, England, with the 162nd General (U.S.) Hospital. She served there from September of 1944 to August of 1945. In September of 1945 the 162nd moved to a site near Manchester, England. She remained with the unit until January of 1946.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of the manuscript, “Bittersweet,” Foster’s account of her WWII service as a Red Cross worker in a U.S. Army General Hospital in England, associations with both American and British personnel, and some impressions of Britain gained on trips taken during leave. The “emphasis is on the American G.I., the impact of his war experiences, with psychological portraits of a number of men.” Foster changed the names of people and the number of the hospital unit in the manuscript, as she hoped to publish the account, but though she presented it to several publishers, it did not sell.
