BACKGROUND NOTE
Doris Minney, daughter of Wilbert and Jessie H. Gordon Minney, was born on June 16, 1907, near Atwood, Rawlins County, Kansas. She began her career as editor of the school weekly at Atwood. She also worked as a reporter on the Atwood Citizen-Patriot before she entered the University of Nebraska in 1924. While a student, Doris worked on various university publications and took her degree in English. After graduation in 1928, Doris Minney taught English for three years. She then returned to newspaper work as a reporter on the McCook Daily Gazette, covering almost every type of assignment. During World War II, Miss Minney served as military editor of the Akron, Ohio Beacon-Journal, writing a daily column, as well as a three-quarter page of features, based on interviews with service men, for the Sunday edition.
In 1949-1950 Doris Minney was a public relations consultant writer at Colorado Woman’s College in Denver. The following year she wrote for the Lincoln Journal-Star. In 1951 Miss Minney returned to McCook to do free lance writing. She continued to free lance while doing public relations work for Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska, and while teaching English courses at various schools. Newspapers carrying her articles included the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Daily News, Kansas City Star, Denver Post, Omaha World-Herald, and Lincoln Journal-Star.
Doris Lucille Minney died on August 7, 1989, and is buried in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery at Atwood, Kansas.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of papers, some oversized newspapers, and one filmstrip relating to the newspaper career of Doris Lucille Minney. Included in the collection are biographical information, newspaper articles and miscellany. The collection dates from 1938 to 1979.
The biographical information of folder 1 includes resumes and data forms about Doris Minney. These items provide information about Miss Minney’s education, career, honors and awards received, offices held, as well as genealogical information about her family. Folder 2 consists of a sampling of newspaper articles Written by Doris Minney, 1938-1979. A chronological listing, which shows the date of publication, the newspaper or magazine in which the article appeared, and the title of the article, is included in the collection. Articles cover a variety of topics, including historical subjects (e.g. George W. Norris, Bess Furman, Charles Lindbergh), as well as features (e.g. Americana, cowgirls, senior citizens). Photocopies of articles are noted on the listing.
Folder 3 (oversize) consist of a special section of issues of the Akron, Ohio Beacon-Journal, 1943-1945. This section, entitled “The Big Parade,” appeared in Sunday’s edition of the newspaper. Doris Minney was editor and primary writer for this section during these years. These newspaper sections are also available on microfilm filmstrip reel 19. The miscellany of folder 4 includes a few articles about Doris Minney, an advertisement for an anthology in which one of her poems is included, notations, and some correspondence.
