BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in New York in 1830, Eugene Asa Carr graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1850. He served in the Indian Wars and was promoted to captain of the 1st U.S. Cavalry. During the Civil War Carr was appointed colonel of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry and later received a brevet promotion to lieutenant colonel in the regular army. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Carr brigadier general of volunteers in 1862. Over the next several years Carr commanded the Army of the Southwest and the 2nd Division of the Army of the Southeast Missouri. He also served with the Army of the Tennessee and the Army of Arkansas. He was appointed major general of volunteers in 1865 and major general (regular army) in 1866. He continued to serve in the army, eventually becoming brigadier general in 1892 and retired from service in 1893. Eugene Asa Carr died in Washington, D.C. in 1910 and is buried in West Point Cemetery in New York.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one reel of microfilm divided into two series. Series 1 contains the memoirs of Brevet Major General Eugene A. Carr. Series 2 is comprised of the journal of General Eugene A. Carr, 1889. The material in this collection relates to the military life of the General. These materials are on microfilm only. Series 1 – Memoirs of Brevet Major General Eugene A. Carr
Memoirs of Brevet Major Eugene A. Carr by his wife Mary P.M. Carr. The bound volume of 226 typewritten leaves is followed by another typed (7 leaves) of the trip of France (p.112-117), and pages numbered 27 to 46, another typing of a portion of the General’s letters of the 1876 campaign; portraits, and an obituary of Clerk M. Carr.
Series 2 – Journal of General Eugene A. Carr, 1889
General Carr used some unfilled pages of a blank volume. He inverted the volume and began at the end, numbering his own pages (page 190 becoming his page 2), to page 44. He also made some notes in the first pages of the blank volume, filmed at the end of the journal. The journal is dated October and November 1889, when Carr was in the Southwest.
